WELCOME TO INTERCONNECTION WORLD

Last week, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) gave its formal approval for a universal mobile phone charger standard incorporating Micro USB connection technology.

The GSMA expects the move to rule out production of 51,000 tons of redundant chargers generated yearly, equating to 13.6 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions. GSMA contends that whereas mobile chargers are currently brand-specific, and users need new ones when they upgrade to new phones, the new chargers will have a longer useful life, across different manufacturers.

Sounds ike a win-win all around, for consumers, industry, and the environment -- right?

Not everyone thinks so.

To me, though, the cynical view is a bit too facile. The need for serious e-waste reduction is a big deal with regard to health of our planet and its people, and I have to applaud the ITU's proactive stance here, inasmuch as every little bit helps. Maybe modest steps toward better ways of manufacturing, such as the universal mobile phone charger standard, will give rise to the larger positive trend that everyone's hoping for, with regard to environmental consciousness. As a wise person once said, little things become big things.

And, really, who wants more of this?
